Carib Night: Midnight at the Beach

Students at Georgetown University indulge in their Caribbean heritage through the Caribbean Culture Circle. On November 12th, 2022, the student organization graciously dedicated its annual Carib Night formal to Children’s Peace Project (CPP).

This annual formal event is curated “to celebrate and allow the [Georgetown] community to experience the depths and diversity of the Caribbean.” This year’s Carib Night: Midnight at the Beach, achieved just that. The board members’ orchestrated a phenomenal event that made me long for the salty night air of Haitian beaches. The beautiful cultural breadth of the Caribbean was showcased by the variety of foods and performances by Khandeya Sheppard, a Trinidadian steelpan musician; Tropical Riddims, a Howard University Caribbean dance team; and Gazaarish, a Georgetown South Asian dance group.

CPP is incredibly grateful to the Caribbean Culture Circle for using its platform to share our work with the Georgetown community and highlighting some of the educational challenges faced by students in Haiti. They not only pledged their ticket revenue to CPP, but also partnered with Georgetown’s The Corp (the largest student-run organization in the US) to donate sales from drinks sold on campus. More than that, however, I was moved to see the amazing display of support from attendees who seized the opportunity to take part in the Caribbean culture.
